By knowing the time at which the lighting struck and the speed of sound, we were able to calculate the distance at which the lightning occurred. Sound travels at 1150 feet per second, slightly more than 1 mile per second. 1 mile = 5280. So, 1150 fps multiplied by 5.5 seconds = 6325 feet. 6325 divided by 5280 = 1.197 miles.
